ASHLAND CITY COUNCIL
PLANNING MEETING
AUGUST 6, 2007
The Ashland City Council met for a regular Planning Meeting on August 6, 2007 at 4:00 P.M. with Mayor Terry Turner, Council Members Zeola D. Echols, Bobbie J. Steed, Rebecca G. Boddie and Mike Beale. Also present was City Clerk Charles E. Foster, Asst. City Clerk Donna J. Bennett, Maintenance Supervisor Randy Hanners, Police Chief Benny Davis, Code Enforcement Officer Terry Raughton, Mary P. Smith of the Clay County Chamber of Commerce, Clay County Commissioners J.D. Davidson, Kevin Kiser, Ricky Burney, Jimmy Patterson, Clay County Commission employees Charlotte Turner, Mary Woods and Jamie Smith, Horace Sims of the TCR Headstart program, Bill Morris of the local VFW Post, Leland Steed and Abby Pruet of the Clay Times-Journal.
Bill Morris spoke to the Mayor and Council concerning the retention of the local VFW building for the Headstart Program. This building located at 580 2nd Avenue North in Ashland has been home to the Headstart Program since 1974. The local VFW chapter leased the building to them for $100.00 per month and Headstart made major repairs and improvements to the property. This past year the local VFW chapter, due to member shortage, has been declared defunct by the state chapter. The state chapter wants the Headstart Program to either buy the facility at a cost of $85,000 or lease the property for $1000.00 per month. Mr. Morris asked that the Mayor and Council all contact the state chapter concerning this and suggest that the state chapter donate the building outright to the Headstart Program considering the situation.
Kevin Kiser, Clay County Commissioner, presented the Mayor and Council with a drafted jail contract. This contract would increase the cost of housing municipal prisoners from $18.00 per day to $23.00 per day if approved. It was asked that a copy be faxed to City Attorney John K. Johnson.
Baron Sandlin was at the meeting inquiring about obtaining business licenses to open a restaurant/arcade on the courthouse square.
There was no business conducted at this meeting.
Meeting was adjourned until 5:00 P.M. when the Regular Council meeting would begin.
